Tremco Spectrem 1 Silicone Joint Sealant From Reflect Window & Door

Using Tremco Spectrem 1 Ultra Low-Modulus Silicone Joint Sealant – What You Need to Know

Specrem 1 from Tremco is a high-performance, moisture-curing silicone joint sealant designed specifically for moving joints. This makes it ideal for materials that experience significant expansion such as aluminum curtainwalls, precast concrete panels, metal panels and window perimeters. It works as an adhesive when used with Spectrem Simple Seal technology and is the recommended product when using ExoAir Air Barrier systems, Tremco Silicone Rubber Extrusions and Proglaze ETA. In fact, it’s the perfect option for any job involving expansion, control, lap joints and EIFS applications. And with minimal prep required, you’ll find this ultra-low-modulus silicone sealant quick and easy to use.

Before You Get Started With Spectrem 1 from Tremco

Before using Spectrem 1, make sure you have the right product for your project. Tremco’s Spectrem 1 comes in 300 ml cartridges, 500 ml sausages, 7.6 L pails, 17 L pails and 208 L (55 gallon) drums and is available in more than 10 different colours. And since it can be applied with conventional caulking equipment, you won’t have to worry about purchasing or renting special equipment. Simply load it up and go like you would with any other sealant. And if your project has special safety requirements, don’t worry. This sealant has been UL registered, GreenGuard certified and SWR validated.

Spectrem 1 Silicone Sealant can be used in any standard joint that is larger than 1/4″ and four times the size of the anticipated movement. Next, install closed cell polyethylene backer rods or Tremco sealant tape as a joint backing. This will allow you to control the depth of the sealant bead and prevent three-sided adhesion. Once the joint backing has dried, check the surfaces you’ll be sealing and use a wire brush, sandblaster or solvent to make sure they’re free from dust, debris, finishes and any other contaminants that can degrade the quality of the seal.

Applying Tremco Spectrem 1 Sealant and Finishing the Job

Once the joint is ready for sealant, simply apply it and use dry tooling to work the malleable silicone into the joint. (You’ll have approximately 10 – 20 minutes before it starts to set.) And there’s an easy way to determine the size of the bead. For joints ranging in size from 1/4″ to 1/2″ wide, the depth should be equal to the width. Joints larger than 1/2″ wide should have a 1/2″ silicone bead. At a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and 50% humidity, Spectrem 1 will form a skin in approximately 10 – 30 minutes. It’ll be tack-free in 30 to 60 minutes. It cures in 7 – 14 days and has full adhesion in 14 to 21 days. Then, you can clean everything up with a solvent such as IPA or MEK.

While Tremco Spectrem 1 works for many different joints, it should never be applied to surfaces that are dirty, damp or contaminated. You should also avoid using it on joints that will be submersed in water. Aside from that, you’ll find Spectrem 1 works well in many new construction, restoration and repair projects. Just be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and use the proper safety equipment. And if you need additional information or would like to order Spectrem 1, contact Reflect Window & Door.
